‘Quite a Number of Assaults’ Keep Toronto Police Busy on St. Patrick's Day

Toronto police had a busy night in the city on St. Patrick’s Day.

“There have been quite a number of assaults throughout the city,” Toronto police spokesperson Const. David Hopkinson said Friday night.

“Some of them are far removed from St. Patrick’s Day so it’s hard say if it is because of the activities, but we have responded to a number of assault calls.”

At 11:25 p.m. on Friday, investigators received a call for six men beating another man outside a chain restaurant in the Yonge St. and Gould St. area, near Ryerson University, according to police.

During the assault, police say the victim in his 40s was stabbed. He was rushed to the trauma centre in serious but non-life threatening condition, according to Toronto paramedics.

Police say the suspects for this assault remain at large.

Officers received another call for an assault outside a bar in the Queen St and Dovercourt Rd area at around 1 a.m. on Saturday.

The caller indicated that a group of men were kicking another man. The victim was reported by the caller to have fallen over and was seen bleeding.

Upon arrival, paramedics rushed the victim to the hospital with serious injuries. He remains in stable condition.

The suspects involved in this fight are still at large.

“We didn’t see anything like a big spike but it was definitely a really busy night,” Const. Allyson Douglas-Cook of Toronto police said Saturday morning.

It is unclear exactly how many calls police responded to on St. Patrick’s Day.

Although Toronto police saw a busy night in the city, Peel Regional Police and Durham Regional Police were reporting a typical Friday night.

“We didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary in Mississauga and Brampton,” said a Peel Regional Police spokesperson.

Saturday morning, Durham Regional Police Services tweeted that they had responded to a total of 1446 calls, which includes non-emergency calls and calls emergency police services. However, like the Peel Region, Durham police said this was typical for any day.
