Fire on Port Perry hospital’s roof found to be caused by construction
A Friday rooftop fire at Lakeridge Health Port Perry hospital was construction-related, officials determined.
The cause of the fire was pinpointed as “a hot tar roofing application process that ignited nearby insulation,†said Scugog Fire Chief Mark Berney in a press release from the Township of Scugog.
The fire forced the evacuation of everyone inside the hospital and shut down the facility on Paxton St. until further notice. Durham police reported that everyone was safe and patients were transported to other hospitals.
The damage done by the fire was about a $10-million loss, Berney said. There is fire, smoke and water damage to the building.
The fire was completely out and the scene was secured by 8:45 p.m. on Friday.
