Orphan cats will now have more purr-sonal space after a donation of 10 doll beds and $300 from Ikea to the Etobicoke Humane Society.

In a video uploaded Tuesday, the cats at the shelter are seen curiously investigating and catnapping on the mini beds that were donated by Ikea’s Etobicoke location. Just a day after its upload, the video surpassed 20,000 views.

“I’m really surprised about all the attention the video got,” said Rebecca Gordon, social media manager at the Etobicoke Humane Society.

“It’s good exposure especially because we always need resources for the animals.”

Gordon said she stumbled upon the idea after seeing a photo of a cat sitting on an Ikea’s Duktig doll bed on Bunz, the online market place. From there, she reached out to Ikea to see if they were willing to help out with the “super cute” idea.

“They were more than happy to help us out and said that they’d love to give us the beds,” she said.

By sheer coincidence, the furniture store had been planning on donating $300 to the animal shelter.

“The (Ikea) location in Etobicoke was already fundraising for a charity and it just so happened that they chose the Humane Society, so on the day we called about the beds, they told us about the $300 donation the staff raised,” Gordon said.

For most of the felines, Gordon says they’ll need a little bit of time to get used to the new furniture, but there are some paws-itive reviews from two cats at the shelter — Catsby and Frankie who are featured in the video.

“Catsby is a very playful cat, and sometimes he’ll perch on the beds,” she said. “Frankie lays under the bed.”

Gordon is hoping the video will shed light on the little things people can do to support the shelter.

“We are 100 per cent donation based, and a lot of the staff treat this like a second full-time job,” she said. “We can always use more volunteers.”
