However, a harsher reality has emerged under the shadow of Donald Trump’s annexationist threats. When Trump repeatedly attacks Canada’s military spending and muses about absorbing Canada as the "51st state," he isn't just engaging in erratic rhetoric. He is exposing how Canada is already treated within the framework of continental defence.

It is time for Canadians to put NORAD on their radar, not as a shield of sovereignty, but as the very mechanism that undermines it.

Donald Trump’s disrespect for Canada thrives because of NORAD, even if he deliberately avoids mentioning the command by name. By obscuring the institutional root of his leverage, Trump prevents Canadians from realizing exactly how deeply entrenched American control truly is. NORAD effectively functions as a mechanism where Canada’s defence apparatus is subsumed into Washington’s strategic priorities.

Trump knows a fundamental truth that many Canadians choose to ignore: Canada cannot even hope to defend itself for a minute as long as a foreign leader controls the "group mind" of the Canadian military establishment. Through years of integrated training, shared command structures, and reliance on American intelligence and hardware, the Canadian military has been conditioned to think of its own survival purely as an extension of U.S. power. This deep psychological and structural dependence leaves Canada uniquely vulnerable to political blackmail.

A country that cannot defend its own borders without relying on the whims of a volatile neighbour cannot truly claim to be a sovereign nation. When Trump threatens tariffs or jokes about annexation, his leverage relies on Canada’s deliberate military atrophy. For generations, Ottawa has treated continental defence as a chore to be outsourced, trusting that the U.S. would always protect the northern flank. Trump has shattered that illusion, demonstrating that protection comes with a steep price tag: absolute compliance, or the threat of erasure.

If Canadians have truly had enough of being treated like a subordinate territory, the response must go beyond diplomatic protests and strongly worded press releases. Canadians must demand a completely independent military.

As long as Canada remains structurally tethered to a defence command that naturally prioritizes Washington's geopolitical whims, Trump and future American populists will continue to view Canada not as an equal ally, but as a territory waiting to be claimed. If Canada wishes to remain a distinct, sovereign country on the global stage, it must first break free from the continental group mind and build a military that answers solely to Ottawa.
