Leafs fan proposes in Maple Leaf Square
It’s been 50 years since the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup, but after Monday’s game, one of their fans walked away with a ring.
With three minutes left in the third period of the Leafs’ thrilling Game 3 overtime victory over the Washington Capitals, Tegan Morellato was shocked when police officers suddenly ripped open the fence at Maple Leaf Square.
The officers singled out her boyfriend Beau DiCicco and began hurrying him out of the public viewing area.
“My girlfriend was all nervous because she thought we were getting kicked out right when it was tie game, you know what I mean?†DiCicco said. “We weren’t even gonna be able to watch the overtime.â€
The officers were actually in on DiCicco’s ruse: he had chosen this moment to propose to his girlfriend of three years.
“I was waiting. I didn’t even know if I was going to do it 100 per cent because I wanted to make sure it was going to be a perfect moment,†said DiCicco, 25. “I had the ring on me and I really wanted to do it at the square, but I know the atmosphere in the square can change if the Leafs are losing. I wanted it to be memorable.â€
As the Capitals jumped out to a 3-1 lead, DiCicco thought it might not be the night. But goals by Nazem Kadri and William Nylander toward the end of the second period changed everything, and with time winding down in the third, he knew this was his chance.
“It was perfect,†he said. “I just went for it.â€
Without explaining where he was going, DiCicco slipped away a few minutes prior to arrange the plan with police officers working security at the square. They were on board right away, he said, and asked him to give them a wave when it was time.
At the next commercial break, he made his move.
“Everybody was chanting, going crazy and giving us high fives. It was an amazing moment,†he said.
Morellato, 24, was initially none-too-pleased when she thought her boyfriend was getting kicked out.
“I was so angry at first,†she said. “I was shaking. It was crazy. I wasn’t expecting it all and everyone’s screaming and cheering and I was so happy.
The couple, who live in St. Catharines and have a 10-month-old daughter, are self-described diehard fans of the blue and white.
DiCicco’s favourite memories involve Tie Domi’s fights with the late Bob Probert. He’s even having a Leafs logo tattooed onto his back this summer.
Morellato’s fandom, meanwhile, began when she started dating DiCicco three years ago. Today, she’s a huge fan of rookie Auston Matthews.
“I started watching games with him and we went to our first game back in December,†she said. “I love being there. We watch every game now and we’ve got our jerseys and all that stuff now.â€
DiCicco posted a video of the proposal to Facebook and on a whim, sent it to the Leafs. The team has since shared it on social media.
“He chose a really good time. I was hoping something would happen because I’ve known about him having a ring, but I didn’t know it was going to happen. He didn’t know I knew about the ring though,†Morellato said with a laugh.
DiCicco said it was a stressful evening for him, although popping the question wasn’t entirely the reason.
“I
don’t really get too nervous for things like the proposal, so I wasn’t
nervous about that at all,†he said. “I was more nervous about the game
actually, to be honest. I kinda knew she was going to say yes. It was
all around just an amazing experience.â€
