Accelerate Your Vehicle Knowledge with Tips from a NASCAR Driver
(NC) With races taking places across the country this summer, what better time to learn about how you can care for your car like the pros? After all, no one pushes a car and its engine to the limits quite like a NASCAR racer.
DJ Kennington is the first Canadian driver to qualify for the Daytona 500 in nearly 30 years. He says one of the keys to achieving top of the line performance is choosing the right motor oil.
“My race car hits speeds of 320 kilometres per hour, and that's tough on an engine,†explains Kennington. “But you'd be surprised to learn that short trips and stop and go driving can be even more brutal on your engine. The only thing protecting it from friction is a micro thin layer of oil, and synthetic is the strongest oil you can use.â€
Synthetic is the oil of choice for both race cars and street cars, no matter what their age. It helps keep the engine clean and running smoothly for maximum performance and protection. The pressure in your engine is up to 10 tons per square centimetre, which is equivalent to the pressure of five cars piled up on top of a high heel.
“During a race, we're running the engine at 8000 RPMs, and take corners at 6200 RPMs so we're really pushing the engine for extended periods in a race,†explains Kennington. “That's why my mechanics prefer the Castrol Edge extended performance synthetic oil, which we heat to 210â°C before we start the engine of my race car. For use on your everyday car, the line's version with titanium is great for added protection.â€
