I think it's safe to say that most Canadians have shoveled a driveway or two. It's also pretty safe to assume that most of us have procrastinated the chore once or twice in our life, but who cares, no big deal, right? Well, if you're dealing with Toronto snow, it can be a big deal because, as it turns out, you're responsible for a fair share of snow clearing.

Wait, what? Isn’t it the city’s responsibility to keep the roads and sidewalks safe? Nope! Toronto’s Municipal Code states that owners or occupants of buildings are required to clear and completely remove snow and ice in front or behind structures.

It is your responsibility as a business owner or inhabitant to apply sand, ashes, and salt to sidewalks when they become slippery.

So, what happens if you refuse this chore on account of your own laziness? Well, according to the city officials, you can face a fine of up to $570 for not clearing snow from private property.

According to the City’s Snow and Ice Clearing Bylaws, you can also face a $125 fines for not clearing snow from public property.

I know, I know, that’s a lot of responsibility you didn’t know about it, but better to grab a shovel then head to court.

"Clearing the ice and snow from the sidewalk in front of your home or business will make it safer for everyone. Failure to do so can result in fines. Please contact 311 to report property owners who did not clear their sidewalk,” a statement on the City Of Toronto’s website reads.

“The City will clear snow from sidewalks within 12 hours of snowfall, where it is possible to safely drive a plow,” it adds.

A weather advisory was issued for southern Ontario this week as the province prepares for heavy snowfall.

It is being reported that some regions could see up to 30 cm of snow, which gives you even more of a reason to invest in some snow clearing gear.
