Ontario government needs green upgrades: Auditor

Ontario could fail to meet ts own target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% below 2005 levels by 2030, Ontario Auditor Bonnie Lysyk says.

While buildings have become the third-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the province, due to a rise in natural gas use, the Doug Ford government declined an opportunity to include energy-efficiency upgrades in the building code, her annual environmental audit says.

“I think the plan probably needs to be revisited,” Lysyk said. “We did find that the actions that are being taken right now with respect to energy conservation if it’s status quo it won’t achieve emission reductions that are in the plan.”

The auditor’s 2020 report released Wednesday also criticizes the province for its management of parks and protected lands, and says it doesn’t take its obligations under the Environmental Bill of Rights (EBR) seriously enough.

There were “multiple examples” of the Doug Ford government failing to post significant proposals as required on the EBR, and the public was left in the dark or given too little time to adequately respond to projects with potential impacts on endangered species like major commercial logging ventures, the report says.
